Meet Bernie Marcus, the Billionaire Founder of Home Depot

In 2015, Marcus donated $1.5 million to Super PACs supporting Jeb Bush and Scott Walker. On June 1, 2016, Marcus publicly announced his support for Republican presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump. He was one of Trump's largest donors, giving $7 million to his campaign. When Marcus announced in 2019 that he would financially support the Donald Trump 2020 presidential campaign, it triggered calls for a boycott of Home Depot even though Marcus was by then no longer with the company. Marcus worked at a drugstore as a pharmacist but became more interested in the retailing side of the business.

It was there that Marcus took over the store’s cosmetics department, according to Bloomberg and later went on to manage the sporting goods and household appliances departments. The Home Depot began to branch out of Georgia to Florida in 1981 with stores opening in Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale. By 1984, The Home Depot was operating 19 stores with sales of over $256 million. To enter the Dallas market The Home Depot acquired Bowater Home Center from Bowater Inc. on October 31, 1984, for $40 million. The increased expansion of The Home Depot in the mid-1980s created financial difficulties with earnings falling by 42% and debt rising to $200 million. The financial difficulties of The Home Depot also caused the stock price to fall. To curb The Home Depot difficulties it opened only 10 stores in 1986 with a stock offering 2.99 million shares at $17 per share which helped The Home Depot to restructure its debts.

Hell, I wouldn't go near it today with any amount of money. Having been born in 1929, I lived through the '40s and the '50s and the early '60s, and you couldn't get into medical school. Only 10% of Jews were allowed in medical schools. And it was almost every medical school in the United States. And I must tell you that it was the biggest shock of my life the day I found out I couldn't get in unless I came up with $10,000.

Marcus, who co-founded The Home Depot in Georgia with Arthur Blank, has a history of supporting conservative political candidates. A Fox News article in 2019 said Marcus announced he would support former President Donald Trump in his 2020 re-election campaign. The 90-year-old billionaire reportedly donated to Trump's 2016 campaign, as well. The article said Marcus still held many shares with The Home Depot. Or what you've been doing, I would say, could be a good model, too. People live on a different planet, I think. I feel one day, I wake up in the morning, and I say, where the hell are they coming from? Why are they defending not drilling when, in fact, climate change, you could put off over a period of time and do it over the next 30 years, 40 years, and do it intelligently, but not slam down on it and kill everybody today? Well, it was easier now to fix it than it was then. He had all these people kept captive in Iran.

Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus reflects on a life of helping others

I realized and looking back now at 93 years of age, I spent most of my life looking ahead, never looking back. But I never realized how much anti-Semitism there was in this country when I grew up. But that philosophy extended beyond the store walls. After The Home Depot went public in 1981, Marcus and Blank made a commitment to give back to the communities where their stores were located. Following through on that commitment, legions of Team Depot volunteers, backed by The Home Depot Foundation, work tirelessly on their own free time to help our nation’s veterans and communities across the country.

It's just an awesome read-- "Kick Up Some Dust, Lessons on Thinking Big, Giving Back, and Doing It Yourself." Bernie Marcus, always a real treat to get some time with you. We saw another football player yesterday struggling with post-traumatic stress trauma-- traumatic brain injury. So we are looking for other philanthropists to come aboard with us and help us open hospitals around the country. In addition to that, the small businessman has so many regulations that they have to deal with. I mean, I was a successful CEO for, like, 20 some odd years.

How Arthur Blank, Bernie Marcus co-founded Home Depot after being fired

Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank dreamed up The Home Depot from a coffee shop in Los Angeles in 1978. Avid DIYers, they envisioned a superstore that would offer a huge variety of merchandise at great prices and with a highly trained staff. Employees would not only be able to sell, but they would also be able to walk customers at every skill level through most any home repair or improvement.

This is what Home Depot maximized, as they build their company. At the time of retirement, Marcus reportedly held about 60 million shares of Home Depot stock, though Bloomberg reports that he likely has sold them all. While Marcus reportedly “pledged to give the majority of his wealth to charity,” he and Home Depot received significant backlash after it became known that he was an avid supporter of former President Donald Trump. "Hi Nathalie," The Home Depot tweeted directly to her Friday.

How Home Depot Was Started : Arthur Blank and Bernie Marcus’ Start Up Story

In tilt-up construction, the concrete is poured onsite, lifted into place, and then attached to the roof. The engineers told the Star that the practice, while normally safe and efficient, is dangerous in major storms because once the roof is lifted the walls collapse in a domino effect. Seven people were killed in the front of the store when the 100,000-pound walls collapsed on them, while 28 people in the back of the store survived when those walls collapsed outward. Only two of the slab walls in the Home Depot survived. In contrast, three people died in the Walmart but 200 survived. Engineers noted that when concrete block construction fails, structural elements break in pieces and usually not in huge slabs.
