On June 1, 2016, Marcus publicly announced his support for Republican presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump. He was one of Trump's largest donors, giving $7 million to his campaign. When Marcus announced in 2019 that he would financially support the Donald Trump 2020 presidential campaign, it triggered calls for a boycott of Home Depot even though Marcus was by then no longer with the company. Marcus worked at a drugstore as a pharmacist but became more interested in the retailing side of the business.

To enter the Dallas market The Home Depot acquired Bowater Home Center from Bowater Inc. on October 31, 1984, for $40 million. The increased expansion of The Home Depot in the mid-1980s created financial difficulties with earnings falling by 42% and debt rising to $200 million. The financial difficulties of The Home Depot also caused the stock price to fall. To curb The Home Depot difficulties it opened only 10 stores in 1986 with a stock offering 2.99 million shares at $17 per share which helped The Home Depot to restructure its debts.
Hell, I wouldn't go near it today with any amount of money. Having been born in 1929, I lived through the '40s and the '50s and the early '60s, and you couldn't get into medical school. Only 10% of Jews were allowed in medical schools. And it was almost every medical school in the United States. And I must tell you that it was the biggest shock of my life the day I found out I couldn't get in unless I came up with $10,000.

The 90-year-old billionaire reportedly donated to Trump's 2016 campaign, as well. The article said Marcus still held many shares with The Home Depot. HD Supply is an industrial supply and distribution company. The company, formerly called The Maintenance Warehouse, provided infrastructure and construction support services for businesses throughout North America.
